You'd have a blast with the player editor in 3D Dot Game Hero. It's a PS3 game, but it includes a character editor. Since the game is a homage to the old 8bit days and the classic RPGs (Zelda, Final Fantasy, etc) it looks pixelated. However, it's pixelated in 3D (voxels), so instead of a drawing in a 2D area with squares, you get to paint in a 3D volume with cubes.
Sort of like what you did here, only with a z-axis. And while the color choices are good, you only get to choose like 6 for your pallete. So very old school ... in 3D!
You'd probably rock in inventing new characters, I bet.
